5 Ways to Entertain in the Air

If you haven't flown before or you're an expert at flying, you may find that long airline trips can be quite boring if your airline has not sort of entertainment such as televisions, radios, etc. While some people can sleep on a plane and make time fly, others have trouble passing the time. This is why we've created some great ideas on how you can pass time while flying.

Call or research your airline

Before you hop on your plane, hop online and do your research on what kind of airplane you're flying. The newer the airplane, the more entertainment you'll have. Some airliners such as JetBlue have satellite radio, satellite TV, movies, and everything else under the sun while other airliners have nothing at all. It's important that you call up the airliners and ask what kind of entertainment they will have on board.

Bring a book or magazine

This one if the most obvious and if you don't like to read, then we suggest you skip over to the next entertainment step. Reading a topic on something you enjoy can really make the time fly by. Whether it's a magazine or a book, make sure that you bring something you know you'll enjoy reading. If you're going to be on a long flight, make sure you bring the proper amount of reading material. A ten page magazine for a five hour flight won't do.

Electronics are your best friend

IF you own any type of electronic like an iPod, laptop, DVD player, etc., make sure that you bring it. Airliners will allow you to use electronic equipment once you reach a certain altitude. The only times you can't use these items are when you're taking off and landing. When you do bring an electronic item, make sure that you bring plenty of battery power. Most airlines don't have outlets that you can plug your equipment into.

Plan for the kids

If you have kids, it's important that you have entertainment for them. Try and think of what they do at home to make the time fly and bring this onto the airplane. You have to remember that you'll be on a plane filled with other people trying to pass the time. A whining or loud kid will not make the other passengers happy. Books, toys, and food are always a kid's best friend.

Bring something simple

If you're afraid your entertainment pack is going to take up a lot of space, think of small things that will pass the time as well. A perfect example is a deck of cards. If you're traveling with a few buddies, you can play a small game of poker or you can play the games by yourself such solitaire. Other small items might include a little handheld casino player or even a crossword puzzle book.

When you're ready to travel, it's not that hard to think of entertainment ideas. With technology growing, you're going to be able to even surf the internet up in the air. Make sure you just look at your daily habits on what keeps you entertained. Take these hobbies and apply them to the air. If you can do these simple steps, the flight will go by in no time!

Phantasmat Game Review

Things are not what they seem in Phantasmat, the latest game from Codeminion. A car crash, a desperate girl, a mysterious old hotel and a submerged town set the scene in this thrilling adventure. Can you successfully escape this phantasmal town and get help or will you end up becoming part of the scenery? Use your hidden object and puzzle-solving skills to get to the bottom of a long-forgotten tragedy in this adventure game!

Phantasmat is the latest game from Codeminion, the developers of hit games such as Brunhilda and Saqqarah. Phantasmat is a worthy successor, containing the same strong adventure storyline and amazing graphics you would expect from a game with such a pedigree. This time, the story is set in a foreboding forest surrounding a cold and dark lake with a tragic history.

The game begins as you are driving along a deserted road during a heavy downpour. Suddenly, ghostly apparitions appear on your windshield, causing you to lose control of the car. One car crash later (depicted in awesome animated glory), you find yourself stranded at the bottom of a ravine in a foreboding forest. As you head to a nearby hotel to use the phone to call for help, you find that there's something really wrong with the place. A cemetery by the lake, a submerged town IN the lake, and the hotel with a name like Drowned Dead Hotel isn't very reassuring either.

The adventure begins in earnest as you try to figure out how to get out of this mess and get help for both yourself and a possibly-mad young lady who seems oh-so-friendly. The first thing you will notice is that the story really grabs you, and definitely takes center stage in this game. The original story (with a few cliches thrown in) has that sense of mystery and urgency that makes you want to find out more rightaway. You might have seen similar stories before, and might even be able to guess how this one ends, but it is so well-written that you are guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained as you experience this thrilling journey.

Unfortunately, a great story won't work if it is not well implemented in a game. Luckily, Phantasmat boasts an elegant interface and features artwork that is truly stunning. The high quality of the artwork is similar to some of the best games in the genre such as the Mystery Case Files games, successfully bringing to life the cold, wet and dark feel of the story. There is also a lot of animation in the game, making it feel more "real". Everything from the many story cutscenes to the ambient effects like water ripples and scurrying insects are all animated to make the game come alive. The moody music, creepy sound effects and good voice acting also contribute to making the game a great entertainment package.

However, no matter how good the story and art are, the gameplay is still important. (After all, this is an adventure game, not a cartoon video) Thankfully the gameplay doesn't disappoint. You experience the adventure via the standard main interface where you can see your immediate surroundings as well as any items you pick up during your travels. In each scene, you will be able to move to adjoining areas and will be able examine various items and areas more closely.

Examining things up close will launch either a puzzle or a hidden object scene with the purpose of either unlocking subsequent zones or obtaining an item needed to solve another puzzle. The hidden object scenes are beautifully drawn and feature items that are fairly difficult to spot. In keeping with the creepy spirit of the game, you are sometimes required to find items such as hands and dead birds! Another unique feature in Phantasmat is that you can choose to play a Match-3 game in order to find the hidden objects. Sometimes in a hidden object game, you can get tired of the constant hidden object scenes. This game has the perfect solution, and you can choose whether you want to find the hidden items via the traditional means or via a Match-3 game.

The puzzles are pretty entertaining too. There are many different types of puzzles, including combination puzzles and the classic puzzle where you need to obtain 4 gallons of water using only a 5-gallon and a 3-gallon bottle. There are also puzzles that involve entire zones, such as having to navigate through the maze-like forest. As with other adventure games, you will also find items or clues that will help you solve puzzles that you previously encountered, requiring you to travel back and forth between zones.

It may seem like high praise, but Phantasmat certainly looks like a great adventure game and a complete entertainment package. You will love it if you liked similar thriller adventure games such as Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove. The basic version of the game is not available yet, but you can get the Collector's Edition which includes exclusive extras such as a bonus adventure, replayable levels and more.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

What is Important to Pack When Going on Holiday?

Going on holiday. Unwinding. Recharging your batteries. Whatever you call it, it is most often the highlight of the year, and you will likely invest quite some time and thought into getting ready for it. One of the tedious and time consuming pre-holiday activities is packing. Some make check-lists, some leave it for the last minute; you might over pack or under pack. Let's look at a few categories of items you may want to keep room for in your suitcase.

Clothes and shoes. A good starting point in choosing the best outfits for your holiday is checking the weather. Look for the nearest city to your destination and check out the forecasts for the appropriate period of time. Another aspect to take into account is diversity: you want to have comfortable clothes for walks, various rides and the general unpredictable outdoor activities, at least one smart outfit for a restaurant or a party, and don't forget to pack a raincoat or umbrella - you don't want to have to spend half your holiday in some hotel room, after all.

Personals and cosmetics. In this department, the vast majority of accommodation facilities offer a satisfying level, in the form of various shapes of towels, bathrobes, slippers, sewing kits, shower gels and general bathroom paraphernalia, with the notable exception of toothpaste and toothbrush. As much as you may want to stay faithful to your favorite shampoo or cream, consider how much space they would take, not to mention the fact that it's not a bad thing to experiment every once in a while - who knows, you may discover some new favorite!

Books and games. Many people consider it a must to travel with some form of entertainment: a book, a portable audio device, crossword puzzles etc. While it is clearly a way to pass the time if getting to your destination takes a long time, don't forget that you are going on holiday. Why not try looking out the window instead, striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler, or even emptying out your mind and getting it ready to absorb the wonders that lie in wait?

Seasoned travelers will tell you that you should pack only the strictly necessary, because you will surely come back carrying twice as much in souvenirs, specific drink, cool accessories or clothing items. So let the culture and wonders of your chosen destination win you over, and leave your 'baggage' at home!

Cruisin 'in Baltimore

Baltimore has come a long way, baby. The capitol of Maryland used to be more renowned for its high crime rate than for its tourist offerings. But after years of cleaning up its image, this trendy city now boasts a wide range of activities to please all ages.

It's also become a popular embarkation port for an economical cruise, as I recently learned when we went on a seven-day cruise to the Bahamas from Baltimore. Although I booked our cruise directly through Carnival, you can often get last minute cruise deals online.

We went to Baltimore a day before our cruise to check out the sights and centered our activities near the Inner Harbor. Baltimore's National Aquarium, once considered the top aquarium in America, has lost some of its luster thanks to stiff competition from Atlanta's Georgia Aquarium and the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach. And it's not cheap: Basic tickets (no IMAX or dolphin feedings) were $90 for our family of four.

If you do go, don't miss their breathtaking new exhibit, "Jellies Invasion: Oceans out of Balance," which features luminous jellyfish ranging in size from a dime to a dinner plate. It's hard to believe these amazing creatures have no brain, with the exception of the muffin-sized Upside-Down Jelly, which seems stuck in reverse at the bottom of the tank and clearly seems to be a few cards short of a full deck.

Another highlight is the "Wings in the Water" pool where you can watch a boogie-board sized turtle scarfing down lettuce, as well as sharks and sting rays (see if you can spot the one with the curly tail). Another highlight is the "Animal Planet Australia" exhibit, featuring caimans, parrots, and lizards lurking around a recreation of an Australian rain forest.

Afterward, step next door to catch some lunch and a little shopping at Power Plant Live, a shopping/restaurant housed in a converted power plant building. (Be sure to stop in the Barnes and Noble to see how they've converted the former smoke stacks into creative display areas.) Other attractions within a short walk from the Aquarium include the Port Discovery Children's Museum, the Maryland Science Center, the Sports Legends Museum, and of course, Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles.

But since I love travel deals, our two favorite sights in Baltimore were free or inexpensive. The first is Fort McHenry. It was here, during the War of 1812, that Francis Scott Key was inspired to write "The Star . Spangled Banner "After the strong against a British bombardment kept the Visitor's Center is a stirring 15-minute film about the battle when the film ends, the curtain opens and -. To the tune of" The Star Spangled Banner "- is get your first look at the stars and stripes flying over the fort. It 's a very emotional moment that makes us proud to be Americans.

The castle houses the same barracks includes shows how the fort was used during the War of 1812, civil war, andeven World War II. On weekend mornings during the summer you can see costumed re-enactors perform military drills and fife and drum concerts.

A must for the kids? The free Junior Ranger program. It offers a workbook full of puzzles, mazes, and scavenger hunt activities designed to teach kids about the fort while having fun. Kids who successfully complete the workbook get a Junior Ranger badge and official park pencil. Entrance to Fort McHenry is $7 for adults. Kids 15 and younger are free.

While the Baltimore Museum of Art is widely known for its excellent collection, we prefer the more family-friendly Walters Museum. It's a short cab ride ($7-$8) from the Aquarium, and it's free. They have a packed-to-the-gills collection of ancient Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Renaissance, and European art.

Plus, in what's undoubtedly the best program for kids I've ever seen in an art museum, they offer special carts on weekends where kids can borrow art books, pick up free art scavenger hunt cards...even borrow a quilt with pockets full of things to read, touch, and hunt for.

Where to stay, eat, and park:

The Holiday Inn Baltimore Inner Harbor-Downtown is a ten-minute walk from the National Aquarium and major shopping. As at all Holiday Inns, kids under 18 stay and eat free with a paying adult. Rooms range from $129-$189 for a double, while secure parking at the hotel is $19 per day. In addition to a full service restaurant, they have a snack shop in the lobby which sells breakfast sandwiches, pastries, coffee, and drinks.

If you visit Baltimore for the day, parking is available in a number of lots near the Aquarium. Only four blocks from the Aquarium, the Harborplace 55 Market parking lot offers a flat rate of $13 per day on weekends. If you're willing to walk a bit further, you can find parking for as little as $8 per day on weekends.

If you love good Italian food, be sure to check out the restaurants in Little Italy, a short cab ride from the Aquarium. Top-rated Aldo's Ristorante is a long-time Baltimore favorite known for impeccably top-notch ingredients. For died-in-the-wool Italian food gourmands, it's worth the steep bill (@$130 for two for dinner).

Long-term parking at the cruise port is $15 per day. Or, if you stay at the Holiday Inn Express Inner Harbor you can get a stay-cruise rate that includes free parking during your cruise and a free shuttle to the cruise dock.

Shadow of the Colossus Review

This is one of the games that is so rare and doesn't fit into any category, because the game is a category its self, this is an action game, adventure game, puzzle game, horror game all smashed into one.Shadows of the colossus sounds like a simple game, sure search for colossus and find its weakness, stab it.

This is not the whole story here folks. This game slowly reveals it self to be something with more complexity and mystery. Every journey you take to find each colossus makes you go through beautiful landscapes, that can feel dreamlike but yet it feel so real.

You will travel from a large cliff overlooking a river and from the river to a thick and lone forest, and then you might find your self in a desert. Since the environment is so big, you get to travel by horse, courtesy of aggro, the best animated animal in the game. Controlling the horse can be complex, and the artificial intelligence in the game is so developed that it keeps you from riding the gorse off a cliff. Through the game you will be armed with a sword and bow.

Each colossus you face, will require careful thinking, experimentation, trial and error because there are many ways to defeat them. You can tell the designers have a lot of imagination while creating this colossus. There are sixteen boss battles, but there is nothing like the rush you experience while discovering the keys to defeating these beasts. If you still own a PlayStation 2 and want to experience something challenging and beautiful then picking this game up is a must because games like this don't come to often.

How to Survive a Road Trip With Your Kids

Going on a road trip with your husband? Sounds like fun...but when you have a handful of kids at the back of the car too...well there must be about a million other things you'd rather do instead. Root canal anyone???

Friends, take comfort - it doesn't have to be so bad! With just a bit of advance planning even the longest journey's can become fun filled experiences for everyone - you included. So read on for some tips on how to survive (and even enjoy) a road trip with your kids!

1.Music - musical accompaniment is always successful. If. you kids have their own mp players they can choose their own music and go into their own world and enjoy themselves. If however, you have a communal car CD player, I recommend avoiding fights right at the beginning of the trip by choosing a method for deciding what music to play. Perhaps each person will have a turn choosing the CD (including parents), or you can use the "even handedness in randomness approach" by sticking your hand into the CD pile and pull one out without checking which CD it is. With us this is what works best and everyone seems very happy with the method.

2.Stories - you don't need to just listen to music, take a break from the sweet sounds, and download some classic stories from the internet that the family can listen to together. You will find on the web stories that you can download for a couple of dollars as well as free story resources.

3.Travel bag - Help each kid pack their own travel bag which is just for the car. You can buy or download loads of activities like coloring in, crosswords, Sudoku puzzles etc. You can get sticker books for the kids, and of course make sure that they have a pencil case in the bag. Help them choose snacks for the road and tell how long these snacks must last for.

4.Let them navigate - give you older children a map and let them navigate for you. Even if you don't want them to navigate they will really enjoy following where you are on the map, and its a great educational experience for them as well. They can mark off the towns, junctions and attractions as you pass them.

5.Keep a journal - encourage them to keep a journal of the trip, which they can write while in the car. Encourage them to keep souvenirs of the trip - napkins from the gas station, entrance tickets to the sites you have seen, brochures etc which they can stick in the journal. Either they can keep personal journals or they can each take turns in writing entries in the family journal.

6.The budding photographer - if you have a few phones and a camera, let them illustrate their journals with photos that they took themselves while in the car, or encourage them to take pictures along the way for a gallery display project that they can prepare after your trip.

7.Games - There are so many fun games you can play in the car which are appropriate for kids of all ages. Like count how many red cars you see, play the alphabet game, and many many more. Check out http://www.gameskidsplay.net/GAMES/MENTAL_GAMES/CAR_GAMES.HTM for more ideas.

8.Prepare in advance a road trip Scavenger Hunt which will be made up of about 20 missions which they will have to accomplish on the trip. This includes spotting specific signs or attractions that you expect to pass along the way, it can include counting cars, interviewing tourists, collecting information etc

8. Scavenger Hunt - Prepare in advance a road trip Scavenger Hunt which will be made up of about 20 missions which they will have to accomplish on the trip. This includes spotting specific signs or attractions that you expect to pass along the way, it can include counting cars, interviewing tourists, collecting information etc

9.Take a break! - Make sure you take regular breaks and make sure that your kids stretch their legs, eat some food, use the facilities and use up a bit of energy while you are out of the car.

10. Bribery and corruption! - Never underestimate the benefits of prizes and incentives for fantastic behavior in the car and full cooperation at all times. These can take the form of treats during your breaks, extra special activities when you have reached your destination, or a fantastic reward when you return home.

So folks, with just a bit of forethought and planning, your upcoming road trip can truly be loads of fun and a bonding experience for the whole family. Enjoy!

Boost Your Child's Brainpower with Sudoku

In less than a year the Sudoku bug has infected huge numbers of the UK population, and it is fast spreading across the world! Why has a simple logic puzzle become so popular, and how can your kids benefit?

Sudoku puzzles were first published in the US in the 1970s and are sometimes known as "Number Squares". They have been popular for many years in Japan, where the name "Sudoku" (meaning "single number") was coined. The current craze was started late in 2004 when a UK newspaper started publishing the puzzles. Within weeks the puzzles were picked up in other newspapers and Sudoku became the pastime of choice for commuters, parents - and even kids!

From a parent's point of view, Sudoku puzzles are perfect for long journeys, waiting rooms, and rainy afternoons. They are being found more and more in the classroom as teachers wake up to their benefits and use them as time-fillers for children who finish early, as whole class activity, or as "homework". Indeed, the UK government-produced Teachers magazine has recommended that Sudoku puzzles are used in the classroom as brain exercise!

As well as developing your child's logic and reasoning skills and concentration, Sudoku puzzles, if done at the right level, build your child's confidence. Children of all abilities enjoy the challenge of a Sudoku puzzle, if the puzzle is age-appropriate. Bear in mind that many of the puzzles published in newspapers are too difficult for younger children, so it is worth seeking out puzzles made especially for kids. Children as young as five years old can try the 4x4 grids, then build up to the 6x6 grids and finally the traditional 9x9 grid.

Why are Sudoku so appealing? Firstly, although Sudoku grids usually use numbers, your child does not need mathematical skills to solve the puzzles - only logic. Using logical reasoning appropriate to his/her age, your child decides how to place numbers into a Sudoku grid. There is only one correct answer for each puzzle, no guessing is necessary, and the rules are easy to learn. The more puzzles you do, the better you become. Each puzzle typically takes a child about 20-30 minutes to complete, and gives them a real sense of satisfaction when finished!

And that, really, is the secret of their popularity. You feel good when you finish one! And then you want to try another one, and another ....

Managing Long Haul Flights

One of the the very least relaxing features of international travel is actually a long time flight journey. Sitting for several hours in a cramped seat in a steel tube close to other people who smell funny is no one's idea of a refreshments. Though the advantages of lengthy haul trip tend to be good: deplaning in a truly exotic location so unique from exactly where you took off, the possibility to explore the world in a way which was unavailable to generations before.

There are a number of techniques that I've come across in my time, in particular on those terrible 12-hour flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai, for surviving the long haul.

Before boarding

Stand up. You are about to be sitting down in a forced position for the next 6-12 hours. No matter how poorly your feet hurt, always keep standing. Go walking around. Browse the magazines. Buy a book. Go to the powder room 6 times. Whatsoever it will take, just don't sit down.

Perform your exercises. I can't explain to you just how stretching prior to an extended haul flight has served me. Specifically, you will certainly desire to stretch your calves, feet and back to be sure they are good and loose prior to all that sitting.

Get bottled drinking water. No matter how much water is provided on the plane, it's not going to be sufficient. You will thank yourself for buying that big container of drinking water before you get on the plane (just make sure you do it right after the security checkpoint).

On board

Drink lots of water. I cannot stress this enough. You must drink lots of water. Planes are usually low on air and high on CO2 output. They offer canned, dry air and they are very, very dehydrating. Having lots of water may help you stay relaxed during the flight and minimize jetlag later on.

Get up frequently. I don't care if it inconveniences the guy sitting next to you, you have to get up and walk around on long haul flights. If you do not, you risk acquiring leg blood clots (known as deep-vein thrombosis), inflammation and cramps. I normally get up once per hour and walk up and down the aisles. Frequently, I will stand (for as long as the flight attendants let me) in the galley near the food service, or by the bathrooms. Usually, I spend time stretching my legs and circulating the plane in a slow walk.

Take entertainment. iPods, books, magazines, a newspaper, crossword puzzles. Yes, all of them. Eight hours inside a cramped tube is not really the time to give up on the entertainment factor.

Drink alcohol. Okay, almost every jetlag remedy internet site is actually going to inform you never to get this done, but I usually do and here's why. Flux Family Secrets - The Ripple Effect Game Review

Flux Family Secrets: The Ripple Effect is a hidden object game that experiments a little with the genre. In this game, you will find hidden objects, puzzles, adventure and even a few history lessons! In Flux Family Secrets, you play the role of someone who does not know their past and are actively seeking it out. A mysterious family contacts you and sends you on an adventure of a lifetime. Using a time travel device, you get to go back in time and solve historical puzzles.

The story begins with the mysterious Flux family welcoming you into their home and presenting you with a few puzzles to prove your worth. You then discover that the family has a time travel device that they use to repair damage caused by time Ripples. You then get involved helping them realign history, going back in time and solving puzzles and obtaining artifacts in the various categories such as art, music and flight.

The gameplay in Flux Family Secrets is refreshing as well. Rather than searching each scene for a shopping list of hidden objects, everything you search for in this game has a purpose. You are required to find parts of items that have been broken up into a few pieces. Once the items are assembled, you will need to either place them back into the scene where they belong, or get them to interact with some other object in the scene to progress or activate a puzzle.

The puzzles in the game are plentiful and well spread-out throughout the game so that you don't get bored with constantly looking for hidden objects. The puzzles aren't too complex, but there are many of them and they are pretty well thought out. You get to solve cryptex puzzles, safe-cracking, arrangement puzzles and even a couple of arcade-style minigames.

When you get to the time travel bits of the game, you will find that the hidden objects and puzzles aren't very straight-forward at all. In every "category" that you go back to fix (such as Art or Music), you will be presented with 3 scenes featuring 3 masters in their craft. The objects and puzzles in the 3 scenes are interconnected. You will need to solve puzzles in one scene in order to unlock puzzles and objects in a different scene. This adds a new dimension to the game, requiring you to keep hopping between scenes.

The game also adds a nice "history lesson" angle that makes it educational as well. The game will give you a brief description of Da Vinci and the Mona Lisa when you encounter them in the Art scenario. Similarly, you will learn more about the origin of flight and the Wright brothers when you encounter that scene in the Flight scenario.

The graphics and music are above average in this game. The art style and soundtrack are different for each scene and reflect the styles prevalent in those historical periods. In all, Flux Family Secrets is a game that tries to blend in features from the hidden object, puzzle, adventure and mystery genres and succeeds at doing so.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Aussie Birds & Crossword Puzzles

There are many smaller lizards, and the native reptiles include several species of pythons, which, although they grow to a length of twenty feet or more, are not classed as dangerous. The giant brown snake is the largest venomous snake in Australia, growing to ten feet. The black snake, tiger snake and the death adder belong among the deadly species, and there are others considered mildly venomous, Australian snakes, however, are secretive and will seek to get away rather than to attack humans. Study of the reptile life alone in Australia would be a life work for a capable herpetologist, for there is much to be learned of the habits and life history of these inhabitants of the bush country. The emu is an Australian bird that has been introduced to many as a convenient three-letter word in crossword puzzles. It appears on the coat of arms of Australia and on one of the country's stamps. Unfortunately, the emu has been a victim of persecution on the ground that seeds of the prickly pear cactus stick to its feet as it wanders.

The "Bearded Lizard", Amphibolurus barbatus, is the clown of the lizards. On the defensive if makes both a ridiculous appearance and one that must be frightening to small enemies. The "Frilled Liiard", Chlamydosaurus kingii, stands at bay with its sharp teeth and powerful jaws ready to grab whatever comes within its reach. At the bottom is an Australian skink, Egernia nilida, found abundantly in the great Jarrah forest of the southwest. It peeks out of a crack in an old log to survey the scene before emerging. Emu mother and chicks. The youngsters are always striped or mottled, giving them an excellent protective color pattern. Mother guards them carefully and sends them scurrying for cover at the first sign of danger and they are then very difficult to find for food through the cactus patches.

Thus it has spread the bane of the stockmen. In Queensland much money was spent in an attempt to exterminate the bird. However, the cactus has now been quite well controlled, and the birds are no longer extensively disturbed. Why the emu was not wiped out seems a mystery to one who sees them standing within a short distance of an automobile gazing curiously at the contraption. However, let the car door be opened and the bird will be off in a flash, and it can travel rapidly. Those who have attempted to clock its speed from a travelling car credit the emu with a speed of from thirty to forty miles an hour.

Our Top Ten Team Building Exercises

You've recruited the individual members of your team. You've established your goal. You've developed a plan and a timeline. Now the trick is to get all those unique individuals working together toward the same goal. Given the varied personalities, communication skills and personal agendas individual members bring with them to the team, getting your team to work cooperatively can be a challenge.

In the most productive teams, members are individually and cooperatively focused on Reaching the goal of the team. Members understand the dependencies that the team, that depends on their individual work and affects the quality of the work of others and ultimately, the ability of the team to achieve its objective. Members respect, appreciate and recognize each person's unique contribution to the efforts of the team, but the emphasis on goal ideal cooperative team performance.

construction of outdoor education team has not been all the rage a long time ago. The team will traveloffsite for a "fun" day of rope games and unusual problem solving, typically at an outdoor education center. Unfortunately, too often there was little follow-up and any lessons learned never made it back into the workplace. Today, the emphasis has shifted to in-house team building exercises that can be accomplished at the beginning of a meeting.

Follow these key steps to plan a productive team building exercise:

Keep it simple. It should be quick and easy to set up in a typical meeting room.
It doesn't need to be expensive. You can get a lot of mileage out of basic office supplies or a few items from your kitchen pantry.
The exercise should be geared for normal office clothing or team members should be told ahead of time to dress appropriately.
People have a hard time relating to large groups, so divide the team into small units of 2 to 4 or 6 people. By breaking down barriers and creating partnerships within these small groups, team members will be better able to relate to the larger team.
Instructions must be easy to understand, especially by any non-native English speakers in your group.
Limited instructions may be part of the team building exercise. Forcing people to figure out what to do or how to do something helps team members identify skills and abilities in themselves and their peers that can help them define their roles on the team: leader, facilitator, problem-solver, communicator, etc.
The exercise should engage all members quickly.
It should present a problem that has multiple solutions to allow for creativity, but that can only be solved through collaboration and cooperative action.
You can increase the difficulty level of any exercise by adding a complication such as "no talking," or by speeding things up by asking, "How can you do it faster?"
At the completion of the exercise, it is crucial that a facilitator, often the team leader, lead the team in reflecting on what happened, the choices made, and how they interacted with each other. Team members should discuss what they would do differently next time. Reflection is critical to identifying and reinforcing learning.

Try these team building exercises to get your team off on the right foot.

Scrambled Jigsaw. Before the team arrives, place a jigsaw on each table. To manage the time element, use large-piece children's puzzles of 100 pieces or so. Remove 5 pieces from each puzzle and move them to another table. As the team arrives, divide members among the tables. Instruct teams to fully complete their puzzle, by any means, in the shortest amount of time possible. As puzzles are completed and teams realize pieces are missing, they will be forced to negotiate with other teams to complete their puzzle. This exercise promotes flexibility, communication, negotiation and cooperation.

Creative Assembly. Purchase 3-D punch-out wood dinosaur puzzle kits. Divide the team into groups of 2 to 4. Without comment or instruction, give each group the unpunched puzzle pieces, one complete puzzle per group. Do not let the group see the boxes, pictures or instructions or in any way identify what you have given them. Instruct each group to assemble its project, telling them they can only use what is in front of them. You'll get some interesting and creative constructions, a lot of laughter and some good natured frustration, particularly with the winged dinosaur kits. When time is up, ask each group to describe its construct. In this exercise, creative thinking, brainstorming, problem-solving, cooperation and consensus will certainly get a workout.

Slight of Hand. Divide team into groups of 4 to 6. Hand each group 4 tennis balls. Tell them each person must handle all 4 balls in the shortest time possible. Do this several times, each time asking, "How can you do it faster?" This exercise will progress from the obvious passing of the balls down a line, to around a circle, to some interesting ball drops and hand swiping. Your team will practice cooperation, quick thinking and creative problem solving in this exercise.

Going Up. Divide team into groups of 2 to 6. Give each person one 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper and one 5" strip of masking tape. Instruct each team to build the tallest possible free-standing structure. This exercise promotes cooperation, creative thinking, problem-solving, consensus, leadership and division of labor.

Gnome Dome. Divide the team into groups of 2. Give each group 20 gumdrops and 12 toothpicks. Instruct each group to build a dome. Problem-solving, creative thinking, cooperation (and possibly snacking) will be practiced during this exercise.

Poisonous Web. Stretch a piece of rope across a door frame, securing it to the frame or connecting wall with duct tape. You'll need two pieces of rope, one 3 feet off the ground, the other 4 1/2 feet off the ground. You are creating a "window" 18 inches wide that you describe to the team as a "poisonous spider web." The team must work together to get all members through the opening without touching the ropes. They must go through, not under or over the ropes. If a team member touches either rope, the entire team must go back to the beginning and try again. This exercise builds cooperation, leadership, creativity and problem-solving. It also forces team members to trust and depend on each other.

Hang Ups. Hand each person a wire coat hanger. Tell the group they may work individually or create their own groups. Instruct them to make something useful from their coat hanger. Set a time limit of 5 to 15 minutes. Ask each person/group to describe his "tool" and its use. This exercise will indicate which of your team members are natural leaders or born socialites as well as which are more shy and may need to be drawn out when working with the group.

In the Picture. This is another puzzle game. Divide the team into groups and give each one a jigsaw puzzle from which you have already removed one piece. Each team will complete a puzzle with one missing piece. Ask each team what this represents in terms of the team. You're aiming for discovery of the importance of each individual to the successful accomplishment of the team's goal, but you may get some interesting responses about proper planning, supply officers and quality control.

All Aboard. This is another physical game. Depending on the size of your team, place a 1-foot to 3-foot square of cardboard on the floor, or mark off a square with masking or duct tape. Draw numbers, one for each team member. In order of the numbers drawn, team members must stand in the square. As the number of people in the square increases, members will have to work together and get creative to get everyone aboard. This exercise practices cooperation, problem-solving and leadership.

Bridge the Gap. Divide the group into teams of 2 to 4. Give each group a small ball of modeling clay and 12 toothpicks. Instruct them to build the longest cantilever bridge they can. Award points for speed of construction, length of bridge, ability to stand without tipping over and ability to hold weight (to measure this, stack quarters until the bridge tips or breaks). Team members will practice creativity, problem-solving, consensus (and manual dexterity).

To be successful, teamwork must be more than a method of dividing up the work to get the job done. Teamwork must embrace a cooperative attitude of mutual respect, shared responsibility and open communication. Teamwork recognizes each team member's individual contribution to the team in the context of the interdependency of those Cooperative research efforts in the team's goal.

Vacation in Style, Even on a Budget

Smart vacationers have discovered that they can make their vacation budgets go a lot further, if they plan carefully. One of the biggest items of expense on a vacation is accommodations, and the secret of making reductions on this item is to opt for renting a vacation home rather than staying in a hotel.

If you are not familiar with vacation home rentals, here is how it works. Furnished homes for rent are available in many of the nation's top tourist destinations. They are offered by individuals and often by specialized agencies that handle the rentals.

The homes are fully equipped, immaculately clean, and loaded with luxury items, like TVs and DVD players in all rooms, wireless internet, swimming pools, etc. You will even find that the book shelves are usually filled with good books, magazines and puzzles. They have all the comforts that you would expect at home, and probably a lot more as these are luxury homes.

Just search for "vacation home rentals" in your target destination, and you will find the listings. Often you will have to book in advance, especially if you are going to travel during a peak vacation season. When you arrive at the destination you can pick up the keys and enter your "home away from home."

What are the advantages? The sheer amount of space and luxury that you get beats the hell out of most hotel accommodations that you could ever find. You have the flexibility and privacy that you can never get in any hotel. You can come and go when you want and eat when you are ready to eat. You can prepare the foods that you like or go out to eat when you want to do it.

But perhaps the best advantage is the sheer economy of it. For example, you can rent a luxury three bedroom two bath home with a private pool, 15 minutes from Disney World for as little as $130 per night in the low season and only $160 in the peak season (such as Christmas). If you stay for more than five days there are no cleaning fees.

If you are traveling all alone, then maybe a hotel would be better, but if you are taking your family and possibly traveling with your friends and their family too, then you can make big savings by getting a vacation rental home rather than renting rooms in a hotel. Many vacationers have already done the math and they have found that renting a vacation home makes good sense economically. And those who have followed up on the math by actually staying in a rental home have been greatly impressed by the comfort, convenience and sheer luxury of the vacation homes.

So the next time you are going on vacation, start to think "outside the box" and look around for vacation home rentals that will enable you and your family, and maybe even your friends too, to enjoy a luxurious vacation with plenty of space, and yet stay well within your budget.

Pre-Trip Check List

Need a checklist of pre-trip?

Here are my suggestions to get started ...

One month before:

If you do not already have one, enter an e-mail to stay in touch. To keep in touch throughout the world, I use a Yahoo email address. Since Yahoo is accessible from any computer in the world, so is my e-mail. If you set up a new account, use only letters and numbers in your ID and password. Make your own list of contacts. There have been times when I had trouble findingsymbols on foreign keyboards including the @ sign.

I scan my important documents and email them to my Yahoo address. If I need a copy, I can access them through my email account

Make sure your ATM card uses a 4 digit pin. And learn your pin by the numbers, not letters. Many international ATM machines have only digits on them.

Call your bank and credit card companies and let them know you'll be away and where. Carry more than one credit card in case of an emergency.

For a money pouch, I use Magellan's Deluxe Secret Waist Wallet. I find it very comfortable and easily accessible.

Be sure to check the condition of your luggage and replace it if necessary. Distinguish it in some way: yarn bow on the handles, colored tape along the sides, neon luggage straps

Make copies of your itinerary to put into your suitcase.

Learn how to make overseas calls from the country you will be visiting. If you want to take your cell phone, call your cell phone provider for information.

If you have a pet, make pet sitting arrangements.

Confirm all your reservations. If this is a car trip, take your car in for a checkup.

Check your wardrobe. Do you have the right clothes for your trip? If not, time to go shopping

One week ahead:

Put your newspaper on vacation stop.

Put your mail on hold or arrange for someone to pick it up.

Prepare emergency contact information to leave with friends and neighbors.

Check Your medications. Do you have enough for your trip and possible delays in emergency?

By public transportation? Plan your trip airport / train station / port / etc

Gather all the documents in one place. Put copies in a different place.

Get your camera and accessories ready. Enter your camera's manual and extra batteries for the charger. Read the fine print on the back of the charger.
Most of the taxes now working with two streams and that's itneed to bring outlet adapters.

Two days ahead:

Attach your lights to timers.

Put together a 'keep busy' kit for you and everyone traveling with you: books, puzzles, toys, etc

Check out the weather, at your destination, to make sure you are bringing the right clothes.

Eat or give away the perishables that are in your refrigerator.

Your carry on bag should be packed with medications and anything else that will not be easily replaceable at your destination.

Prepare the cash for your trip. If traveling domestically, traveler's checks are OK but internationally they can be very hard to convert. The ATM machine, in general, is the best way to get local currency

One day ahead:

Take your pet to the kennel, or if staying in the house, confirm arrangements with pet sitter.

Water your plants.

Adjust the a/c or heat appropriately

If traveling domestically, print out your boarding passes.

Include some snacks in your carryon, especially if traveling in the US where the airlines don't feed us anymore.

Set your alarm and get a good night's sleep.
